Ashes are marked in the sign of a cross on parishioners' foreheads at St. Mary Catholic Church in Woodstock on Wednesday afternoon. The use of ashes as a sign of penitence comes from Jewish tradition and was carried over into Christianity, with early customs dating back to the fourth century.
