Taking
place on the full moon of the 12th month of the Thai lunar catalog, loi
krathong means 'floating decoration' and is a time to light a candle
and some incense and let all your negativity float away. It's the time
to make a wish and hope for something new. Loi
krathong also coincides with Yi Peng, yi meaning second, and peng
meaning month, another festival held on the full moon to make merit. We
had planned our trip (yes, a trip planned around the moon) around me wanting
to get photos of this event, as thousands of lanterns are lit into the
sky at once and it is an incredible experiencet. An even bigger lantern launch occurred a few days prior, but this was still an amazing sight to see.
Thai people usually make loi krathongs from banana tree trunks and leaves and flowers. We floated some down the Ping River in Chiang Mai.
